Summary:
Two small boys in warrior garb peer at each other across a deserted landscape. Each is suspicious of the other; each is proud and boastful. And so, an argument breaks out that grows bigger and bigger, until it threatens to consume them and everything around them. In this unusual book, words take flight, morph into birds, race down gullies and flood the page, as the two boys begin to accept each other’s differences. I Am I is a memorable and stimulating mediation on the power of imagination and the power of words - and a visual tour de force by a gifted author and artist.

Reason for choosing the book:
This book was chosen because it exemplifies in a vivid and thought-provoking manner the antagonism and subsequent reconciliation between two small boys. It positions them in a universal situation, a no-man’s land, before bringing the narrative back to the familiar and local. Thus, it provides many opportunities for discussion around the theme of conflict and resolution. Marie-Louise Fitzpatrick drew inspiration from the Northern Ireland conflict as the basis for this book.
